An annual nationwide tradition continues on Jan. 1, 2024, as North Carolina joins other states in holding First Day Hikes. If you can't make it to a park today, explore your community and start the year off with some fresh air and nature.

Year of Bear 2024
The annual theme for 2024 is the Year of the Bear! The black bear is the only bear species found in North Carolina and can be found in roughly 60% of the state. Black bears rely mostly on their sense of smell and hearing due to their average (similar to humans’) eyesight, but are adept at climbing, running, swimming and digging.

Parks/Trails

CABE Badge 2022
Carolina Beach State Park is home to the Venus flytrap, a rare carnivorous plant. Visitors like to camp and use the marina. The park is also known for habitats like Sugarloaf Dune, with its unique natural and cultural history.

Carvers Creek State Park is located on Long Valley Farm, which belonged to a member of the famous Rockefeller family. It is home to several endangered animals and protected plants, such as the red-cockaded woodpecker.

CHRO Badge 2022
Chimney Rock State Park features dramatic mountain scenery from the top of the 350-foot rock. The rock overlooks Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure.

CLNE Badge 2022
Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is located in an area that has been a landmark for centuries. The cliffs have impressive views of the Neuse River below. There is also an 11-acre lake with a bathhouse, sandy beach and diving platform.

CRMO
Crowders Mountain State Park consists of two mountains: Crowders Mountain and the Pinnacle. Both peaks have beautiful views of the surrounding piedmont. A trail connects the park to Kings Mountain State Park and Kings Mountain National Military Park in South Carolina.

ELKN
Elk Knob State Park is the only park in the system that offers cross-country skiing. Its summit reaches 5,520 feet, and the view at the top is spectacular. It is one of the highest peaks in North Carolina's high country.

Eno River State Park offers a rich outdoor experience just minutes from the city. There are five areas to access the Eno River, spread out across two counties. Each area has a variety of trails, fishing spots and historic sites.

FALA Badge
Falls Lake State Recreation Area includes seven access areas to the reservoir. Each has multiple recreation opportunities, from boating and fishing to hiking, biking and camping. The Mountains-to-Sea State Trail also winds through parts of the recreation area.

FOFI Badge 2022
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is popular for surf fishing and the loggerhead turtles and other rare species that nest along its sandy shores. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed on the beach seasonally with required permits. A state aquarium and a Civil War-era historic site are nearby.

Fort Macon State Park is centered on a perfectly restored pre-Civil War era fort that offers regular guided tours and cannon and musket demonstrations. Surrounding the fort is an unspoiled shoreline for swimming and beachcombing, while trails offer an opportunity to explore salt marshes and dune fields.

Fonta Flors Badge 2022
When complete, the Fonta Flora State Trail will connect Morganton and Asheville, looping around Lake James for spectacular scenery. Portions of this hiking trail will be open to biking as well.

Goose Creek State Park offers a broad range of coastal experiences, from wetlands along the Pamlico Sound to a cypress swamp viewed from an extensive boardwalk. Boating, fishing, paddling, swimming and hiking each allow unique ways to explore the estuarine areas.

GORG Badge 2022
Gorges State Park sports plunging waterfalls, rugged river gorges and sheer rock precipices. Backcountry-style recreation is a hallmark of the park, from backpack camping to horseback riding. It also incorporates a portion of the long-distance Foothills Trail and touches Lake Jocassee at the South Carolina border.

GRMO Badge 2022
Grandfather Mountain State Park showcases an icon in North Carolina's landscape for generations and offers stunning scenery and unmatched ecological diversity. The park is known for some of the South's most severe weather and challenging terrain, with trails that have hikers scrambling along cliffs and up ladders.

HABE Badge 2022
Hammocks Beach State Park includes Bear Island, a 3-mile long, undeveloped barrier island that is a crown jewel of the North Carolina coast. Visitors can take a ferry or paddle to the island. The park's beaches offer a great place for hiking, as well as viewing wildlife.

HARI Badge 2022
Haw River State Park offers two access areas: one centering around the Summit Center, a residential environmental education complex with numerous amenities, and the other at the newly developed Iron Ore Belt Access. Both areas offer camping, hiking and nature viewing opportunities.

HARO Badge 2022
Hanging Rock State Park started as a Civilian Conservation Corps project and has developed into a park that offers every part of a traditional outdoor experience. Hiking trails lead to picturesque mountain views, rock outcrops, waterfalls and even a mountain cave.

JONE Badge 2022
Jones Lake State Park opened as the first state park for African Americans and has since been a community destination for picnicking, swimming, hiking and paddling. The park includes Jones Lake and Salters Lake, both of which are formed within mysterious geological formation known as Carolina bays.

JORD Badge 2022
Jordan Lake State Recreation Area includes nine access areas scattered around the shoreline of a 14,000-acre reservoir. The recreation area is a premier destination in the Triangle for camping, boating and swimming. It also boasts an observation platform for bald eagles and ospreys.

Jockey's Ridge State Park is home to the tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic coast. Aside from the typical paddling, swimming and hiking adventures, the park is also a great place for sandboarding, hang-gliding and kite-flying.

KELA Badge 2022
Kerr Lake State Recreation Area consists of eight access areas that surround this 50,000-acre reservoir located on the state's border with Virginia. Five of the access areas offer hundreds of campsites, while several boat ramps offer access to renowned fishing spots.

LAJA Badge 2022
Lake James State Park includes two areas to access this beautiful lake, perfect for boating, swimming and fishing. The Catawba River Area and the Paddy's Creek Area both offer a variety of campsites and hiking trails. The Paddy's Creek Area also includes 15 miles of biking trails.

LANO Badge 2022
Lake Norman State Park boasts the region's popular mountain biking network, offering 30.5 miles of single-track trail. Hiking trails provide pristine views of the lake, which is the largest manmade lake in the state, and opportunities abound for swimming, boating and camping.

LAWA Badge 2022
Lake Waccamaw State Park sits on the largest of the mysterious geological formations known as Carolina bays. The lake offers species of ecological life that is found nowhere else, and hiking, paddling and camping allow for multiple ways to explore this unique environment.

LURI Badge 2022
Lumber River State Park has two access areas: Princess Ann and Chalk Banks. Possibilities for kayaking and canoeing on this National Wild and Scenic blackwater river are extraordinary, and there is camping opportunities on both access areas and on canoe-in sites along the river.

MARI Badge 2022
Mayo River State Park is located on the former Mayo Park, a historic and prized community gathering place. The centerpiece of the park is a restored pavilion-style picnic shelter designed by renowned architect Antonin Raymond, a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright.

MEMI Badge 2022
Merchants Millpond State Park can be best explored by paddling the placid, shallow waters of the namesake pond. Hiking, fishing and camping are also great ways to experience this beautiful landscape of Spanish moss, ancient cypress trees and exotic wildlife.

Medoc Mountain State Park stands on the remnants of a mighty mountain range from 350 million years ago. Instead of a typical "mountain" adventure, visitors can enjoy picnicking in the park's open meadow, fishing on the Little Fishing Creek and horseback riding on the bridle trails.

MOJE Badge 2022
Mount Jefferson State Natural Area surrounds a national natural landmark with a rich history. Rising abruptly to more than 1,600 feet above the surrounding landscape, the mountain is often first viewed from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hiking trails and overlooks offer vistas as far as Tennessee.

MOMI Badge 2022
Mount Mitchell State Park is one of the country's first state parks. At 6,684 feet, the mountain is the highest point east of the Mississippi River, and the surrounding spruce-fir forest leads the eye to unmatched views from an easily accessible observation deck.
